We’ve been here since around 1980. Bikes were mostly pretty heavy then. Gears were large, brakes were weak, saddles were uncomfortable, but most riders were enjoying themselves just as much as today. In real terms bikes were more expensive too, but so was almost everything else. Apart from accommodation!

The roads were quieter, but more dangerous. Bike theft was less frequent, but drink-driving more common.
